747: The Jumbo Jet That Democratized Air Travel

In 1965, Juan Trippe, president of Pan American World Airways, phoned Boeing's Bill Allen and asked if they could build an aircraft twice the size of anything flying. Allen agreed to take on the challenge, despite the enormous risks involved. The Boeing 747, which first flew in 1969, was a game-changer for air travel.

The 747 carried 400 passengers, more than double any other commercial airliner at the time. By spreading fixed operating costs over hundreds of passengers, it dramatically reduced the cost per seat. In just a decade after its introduction, the average price of a transatlantic ticket fell by over 40% in real terms.

The Boeing 747 was not just a larger aircraft; it revolutionized air travel. It transformed the industry from one catering to businessmen and the wealthy into mass-market air travel for ordinary families. By opening up cheap long-haul routes, it enabled millions of people to make their first intercontinental flight in a 747.

The development programme cost $1 billion in 1960s money, more than Boeing's entire net worth at the time. The company borrowed heavily and risked bankruptcy if the project failed. Yet, the engineering challenges were significant: no one had built an aircraft that large before, and existing wind tunnels were too small to test a full-scale model.

Despite these hurdles, the 747 was designed in just 28 months and assembled in a purpose-built factory in Everett, Washington. The distinctive double-deck front section, or 'hump,' was originally intended for cargo loading but became an iconic luxury feature of the aircraft.
