787 Dreamliner Thrives in High-Altitude Airports
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has earned a reputation for performing well at airports with high elevations and temperatures, where other widebody aircraft struggle. Airports like Bogotá El Dorado (BOG) at 8,361 feet (2,548 meters), Mexico City (MEX) at 7,316 feet (2,230 meters), and Addis Ababa (ADD) at 7,657 feet (2,334 meters) have selected the 787 for long-haul routes that older widebodies cannot serve.
The 787's performance advantage is due to three design features working together: high-thrust engines, an efficient wing design, and a lightweight airframe. The GEnx-1B and Trent 1000 TEN engines produce up to 76,100 lb (339 kN) and 81,000 lb (360 kN) of thrust respectively, giving the aircraft more margin to lose before reaching minimum takeoff thrust at high elevations.
The 787's wing has a higher aspect ratio than older widebodies, generating lift more efficiently in thin air. Its composite structure is also lighter than aluminum, improving the aircraft's thrust-to-weight ratio and reducing takeoff distance.
