A350 Takes Flight: How Airbus' Design Choices Quiet the Cabin

The Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner are both designed to make long-haul flying more efficient without sacrificing passenger comfort. However, passengers often report that the A350 feels slightly quieter than its competitor.

A comparison of the two aircraft reveals several key differences that contribute to this perception. One major factor is the cabin design itself, particularly in economy class where airlines install nine seats across. The A350 has a wider passenger cabin than the 787 by about 5 inches (12 cm), resulting in more shoulder room for passengers.

This extra width becomes especially valuable on long flights, as it can reduce the sensation of being squeezed between two passengers and make it easier to change position without disturbing neighbors. The distinction is particularly relevant because both aircraft are marketed as premium long-haul machines, but airlines have significant freedom in configuring their cabins.

The A350's wider cabin also contributes to a calmer atmosphere on board. Unlike the 787, which features larger windows with an electrochromic dimming system, the A350 uses traditional manual shades that can block outside light completely. This is particularly useful during daylight hours when passengers are trying to sleep.

Both aircraft feature lower cabin altitudes than older widebodies, with around 6,000 feet (1,829 meters) maintained during cruise. However, the A350's slightly wider cabin and traditional shades contribute to a more controlled environment for passengers.
