Abel Abandons 15 Buffett-Initiated Positions as Berkshire's Cash Reserves Soar

Greg Abel's first quarter as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway has been marked by significant changes to the company's portfolio. In just his first three months in charge, he sold 15 positions initiated by his predecessor Warren Buffett, including some long-held stakes in companies like Visa (V), Mastercard (MA), and Amazon (AMZN). This move signals that Abel is willing to divest even winning positions if he doesn't expect them to continue generating market-beating returns.

Abel's selling spree also included recent bets that haven't paid off, such as Pool Corp. (POOL) and Diageo (DEO). The new CEO has shown a willingness to cut losses, but it's too early to tell if this is a trend. His second quarter will likely provide more insight into his investment strategy.

One notable aspect of Abel's portfolio moves is his disregard for dividend income. Some of the stocks he sold were high-dividend-yielders, including Lamar Advertising (LAMR), Diageo, and Pool Corp. Instead, he has focused on building up Berkshire's cash position, which increased from $373.3 billion to $397.4 billion in Q1.

The Motley Fool analyst team recently identified the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now, but Berkshire Hathaway wasn't one of them. The top-performing stocks included Netflix and Nvidia, with returns of 400,155% and 1,345,502%, respectively.
