Abel Eyes MercadoLibre as Berkshire-Style Investment

Warren Buffett's successor, Greg Abel, may be considering MercadoLibre (NASDAQ: MELI) as a potential investment. The company shares similarities with Amazon without the massive capital expenditures (capex).

MercadoLibre spent only about $1.3 billion in capex over the trailing 12 months, which is more than 99% less than the nearly $152 billion Amazon spent in the same period.

Berkshire Hathaway has experience with Latin America's fintech business and was an early investor in Brazilian fintech StoneCo and the Latin American digital bank Nu Holdings.

MercadoLibre is currently trading at a 29% discount to its mid-2025 peak, and its growth potential may appeal to Abel and others on Berkshire's investment team.
