Ackman Places Billion-Dollar Bet on Payments Industry
Billionaire investor Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management has made a significant bet on the payments industry, buying over $3 billion worth of shares in Visa, Mastercard, and S&P Global. The firm disclosed its new positions in regulatory filings, revealing a $1.12 billion stake in Visa and fresh investments in Mastercard and S&P Global.
The purchases come after a strong quarter for Visa, with the company's CEO Ryan McInerney citing 14% year-over-year growth in net revenue to $11.6 billion and earnings per share up 11%. Visa also reported a 10% increase in quarterly payments volume, surpassing $4 trillion for the first time.
The investment firm is wagering that the infrastructure behind commerce will capture the next shift in how people pay, with McInerney arguing that Visa's value-added services segment, which includes fraud prevention and data analytics, is better suited for AI shopping than alternatives like stablecoins. Pershing Square's concentrated bet on the payments industry signals a deliberate view on where financial data and commerce are headed.
