Ackman's Microsoft Bet: Is It Still a Smart Investment?
Billionaire investor Bill Ackman's hedge fund, Pershing Square Capital Management, has increased its stake in Microsoft by nearly 10% during the second quarter of this year. This move makes Microsoft the third-largest position in the fund's portfolio, accounting for almost 12% of the total holdings.
Ackman's confidence in Microsoft is evident, but it's worth noting that the stock has risen significantly since June 30th, when the stake increase was reported. The surge in value may have made the investment less attractive than it initially seemed.
Microsoft's quarterly earnings, announced in late July, were well-received by investors, causing the stock to skyrocket. The company's revenue and operating income grew by 18%, while its Azure cloud computing segment saw a 43% increase in revenue. Notably, Microsoft did not raise its data center spending guidance for the year, which was seen as a positive sign.
Before reporting earnings, Microsoft traded at a relatively low price of less than 20 times forward earnings. However, following the quarterly release, the stock rose to around 25 times forward earnings, still below its peak but higher than before.
