AdSense Tighens Ad Counting Rules, Publishers May See Impression Decline
Google's AdSense is updating its display ad impression counting method to align with industry standards. Starting February 17, 2027, Google will switch from a 'count-on-download' approach to 'begin-to-render', which means an ad must successfully load and begin rendering before it counts as an impression.
This change could lead to fewer reported impressions for publishers, according to Google. The company acknowledges that publishers may notice a decrease in total display impressions following the transition.
The new method is designed to ensure ads are seen by users before counting them as impressions. This aligns with standards established by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Media Rating Council (MRC).
