Aerospace Industry Struggles with Window Shortages Following California Factory Incident

GKN Aerospace's California factory halted production in late May after an overheating tank sparked fears of an explosion and prompted the evacuation of 50,000 nearby residents for several days. The incident has led to parts delays and industry concerns over the supply of cockpit and passenger windows.

U.S. planemaker Boeing is communicating with operators on steps to manage window inventories after the incident, advising airlines to replace windows only when necessary rather than for aesthetic reasons.

GKN produces windows for several Boeing models, including the 737 MAX, as well as Airbus' A220 and A350 jets. The company's owner, Melrose Industries, said it is working to restore the partially opened window factory to full production by the end of 2026.

Airbus has experienced A220 window shortages but had not delayed production, according to a source familiar with the program. Maintenance provider Lufthansa Technik said the supply of aircraft windows for planes from both major manufacturers has long been strained.
