Agent Control Planes: The New Challenge in Managing Multiple AI Agents
Interest in agent control planes has surged significantly over the past year, according to Google Trends data. A year ago, almost nobody was googling 'agent control plane', but after Microsoft unveiled Agent 365 at Ignite and described it as the control plane for agents, search interest jumped roughly 25-fold worldwide.
This spike in interest hasn't faded away, with search volume remaining four times its pre-Ignite level throughout spring. Several major companies, including Salesforce, GitHub, Google, and IBM, have since rolled out products that describe their offerings using similar language.
Amanda Downie, Staff Editor at IBM Think, attributes the growing interest in agent control planes to the increasing complexity of managing multiple AI agents. 'The tipping point is that enterprises are no longer managing one agent,' she said. 'They're managing dozens or hundreds of agents built on different frameworks, connected to different tools and governed by different policies.'
The control plane concept has been borrowed from the phone industry, where it handles signaling for voice and data calls. In AI systems, the control plane determines which agents can act, what they are allowed to access, how they interact with other systems, and how their behavior is monitored.
