AI Agents Could Handle Up to 30 Percent of Enterprise Work Autonomously

Gaurav Agarwal, Vice President of Technology at IBM India & South Asia, estimates that AI agents could perform around 20-30% of enterprise work autonomously.

This would be limited to tasks that are rule-based, data-based, and systems-based, while decisions requiring judgment would still involve humans.

Agarwal suggests that organisations will need to be selective about the tasks they allow autonomous AI agents to perform, citing examples such as checking leave balances or initiating leave applications.

The cost of deploying AI remains a key constraint to wider enterprise adoption in India, with Agarwal advocating for calibrating AI deployment economics to the scale of the Indian market rather than relying on global benchmarks.
