AI Anxiety Grips Wall Street as Nvidia and Amazon Lead Declines
Wall Street's main indexes fell on Monday as concerns over the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities spread fear among investors.
Nvidia, a heavyweight in the AI sector, saw its shares tumble by 3%, hitting their lowest level in nearly three weeks. Amazon, another major player in the field, shed more than 1% in value.
The selloff was triggered by comments from top U.S. executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who called on AI companies to slow down model advancements. Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed with Amodei's stance.
Chipmakers, including Intel, AMD, and Marvell Technology, declined by 5%, 5%, and 6% respectively, as the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index fell around 5%. The losses narrowed slightly after U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran wants to make a deal and that he would decide whether the United States would engage in the effort.
