AI Boom Creates Lucrative Job Opportunities for Skilled Trades
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says that the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is set to create six-figure jobs for skilled trades, including electricians, plumbers, construction workers, and steelworkers.
Huang noted during a conversation with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year that the global push to build AI data centers, chip factories, and computer factories represents the 'largest infrastructure build-out in human history.'
The construction drive will generate significant employment opportunities across trade professions, Huang said, with many of these jobs offering six-figure salaries without requiring a computer science doctorate.
A shortage of skilled workers needed for AI-related construction projects is also expected, with McKinsey estimates suggesting that the United States will require an additional 130,000 electricians, 240,000 construction laborers, and 150,000 construction supervisors between 2023 and 2030 to meet demand.
Huang's outlook differs from concerns raised by Ford CEO Jim Farley, who has warned that AI is reducing traditional white-collar entry-level opportunities while the shortage of skilled blue-collar workers continues to grow.
