AI Disruption Fears Slam Financial Sector as Charles Schwab Leads Decline
The financial sector took a hit on Tuesday, with Charles Schwab leading the decline after falling more than 5% due to fears over AI disruption. This follows software stocks and wealth managers who were previously affected by similar concerns.
Other notable declines included LPL Financial (down 6%), Wells Fargo (down 3.9%), JPMorgan Chase (down 3.4%), Raymond James (down 3.3%), Bank of America (down 3%), and Citigroup (down 2%).
The AI disruption fears are centered around the potential for smart agents, like Meta's Muse, to move customers' cash out of low-yield brokerage accounts into higher-paying alternatives.
Cash sorting refers to the practice of automatically sweeping idle cash into a bank account controlled by the broker, where it earns a small interest rate. However, if customers notice the gap and move their cash elsewhere, brokers will lose their spread income.
