AI-Fueled ETF Soars 20%, Could Keep Rising
Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the Nasdaq-100 index, has seen a significant increase of over 20% in value this year. This outperformance is largely due to its unique composition and holdings.
The Nasdaq-100 includes only the 100 largest non-financial stocks listed on Nasdaq, excluding financial stocks that are more dependent on interest rate cycles than innovation and growth. QQQ's top holdings include Nvidia (8.3%), Apple (7.4%), Microsoft (5.5%), Micron (5.1%), and AMD (4.2%).
One key reason for QQQ's success is its ability to allocate larger shares of its portfolio to each stock, as it only invests in 100 companies compared to the S&P 500's 500. The Nasdaq-100 is also rebalanced quarterly and reconstituted annually, keeping its existing winners, adding new high-growth stocks, and pruning weaker ones.
The AI boom has heavily exposed QQQ's top holdings, with Nvidia, Micron, and AMD providing crucial chips for AI clusters. Apple is integrating more AI features into its devices, while Microsoft's Azure is becoming a major ecosystem of first- and third-party generative AI applications.
