AI Giants Accused of Anticompetitive Deal to Slow Technological Advancement
Four of the world's leading AI companies - Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google - are facing a federal class-action lawsuit in California for allegedly violating US antitrust laws.
The suit claims that these companies illegally agreed to slow their technological advancement, undermining free competition and reducing the value users receive from paid subscriptions.
The alleged agreement dates back to September 12, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay advocating for industry-wide cooperation to slow development in favor of safety protocols.
Amodei proposed a three-point plan to slow technological advancement due to cybersecurity risks. The same day, leaders from competing companies - Sam Altman of OpenAI, Elon Musk of SpaceXAI, and Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind - expressed support for the initiative.
