AI Giants Open Discussions on Joint Safety Standards Amid Growing Concerns
OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are discussing joint artificial intelligence safety standards in an effort to address growing concerns over the risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems.
The talks began after Demis Hassabis, chair of Google DeepMind, proposed the creation of a U.S.-led standards body in July. Hassabis suggested a public-private partnership or self-regulatory organisation with federal oversight similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.
Industry leaders are debating whether development of advanced AI models should slow down. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for companies to reduce the pace of improvements to their most capable systems, and Hassabis supported this proposal. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that slowing down is now a primary topic of discussion within OpenAI.
OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane stated that the company is working with other firms on voluntary industry-led standards, which would complement mandatory federal safeguards and democratic oversight.
