AI Hedge Fund on Brink of Collapse After Suffering $67% Loss
A hedge fund focused on AI investments, Situational Awareness, is facing collapse after suffering significant losses due to its leveraged bets. The fund's owner and manager, Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, launched the company in 2024 with a focus on companies in the AI ecosystem.
Aschenbrenner rose to prominence with high returns from his AI-focused investments, but the fund's fortunes took a turn for the worse when global chip stocks experienced a broad selloff. This triggered a margin call at the fund, which had borrowed heavily to amplify its returns.
The portfolio's value dropped 67% in July alone, prompting Situational Awareness to offload most of its public equity holdings to Citadel. However, this move was not enough to prevent the losses, and JPMorgan Chase, one of the fund's key lenders, subsequently cut off lending activity for the company.
The SEC has also taken notice of the situation, sending subpoenas to Wall Street banks working with Situational Awareness to gather information about the fund's trades and use of leverage. The development raises concerns about the risks associated with leveraged bets in volatile markets.
