AI Investments Fuel Big Tech Earnings Surges
The earnings season for Big Tech companies has revealed an unexpected boost to their profits. Private investments in AI companies, such as Anthropic and SpaceX, are now playing a significant role in the earnings of these public giants.
This phenomenon occurs because accounting rules require certain equity investments to be updated to reflect their estimated market value each reporting period. When valuations rise, companies can record an accounting gain in their income statement without selling any shares.
Alphabet reported $98 billion in other income during the second quarter, largely attributed to Anthropic and SpaceX's higher valuations. Amazon recorded a significant gain from its investment in Anthropic, with $53.4 billion in pre-tax other income. Microsoft also benefited from its Anthropic investment, recognizing a $3.2 billion gain.
The rising value of these AI companies has created a new variable for investors to watch. While the core businesses of Big Tech remain strong drivers of long-term value, this development highlights the increasing importance of private AI investments in earnings reports.
