AI Model Unlocks Hidden Water Hotspots on the Moon
The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model is an artificial intelligence tool designed to analyze lunar data and provide insights for scientists. The model, available as open-source software, uses a multimodal AI approach to recognize relationships between various types of information about the Moon's surface.
This technology has already proven useful in detecting water ice on the Moon, which is a valuable resource that could be used directly or converted into oxygen and fuel for future crewed missions. The model combines data on surface temperature, terrain morphology, and shadow areas to identify potential ice locations.
The Lunar Foundation Model can also detect craters with high accuracy, which are essential for understanding the Moon's history and timeline of impacts. Additionally, it can segment irregular mare patches, a type of volcanic formation that provides clues about the Moon's volcanic past and thermal evolution.
