AI Overviews Halve Website Clicks Shifting Business Focus to Citations
Recent research from the Pew Research Center reveals that Google searches featuring AI Overviews have a significantly lower click-through rate to external websites, dropping nearly 50%. According to the study, searches with AI Overviews yield an 8% click-through rate, compared to 15% without them. This trend highlights a growing issue for businesses relying on organic traffic from search engines.
The data also shows that only about 1% of AI Overview sessions result in a click on a cited source. Additionally, roughly 26% of users end their session entirely when an AI Overview is present, compared to 16% without one. This suggests that many users find the AI-generated answers sufficient, reducing the need to visit external sites.
SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data indicates that zero-click searches, where users get their answers directly on the results page, now account for about two-thirds of U.S. Google searches, up from around 60% a few years ago. While Google has disputed some aspects of the research, independent SEO firms have observed similar patterns, confirming the broader trend.
Despite the potential concerns, experts advise businesses to shift their focus from optimizing for clicks to ensuring they are cited within AI-generated answers. This involves building credibility through earned media, structured data, and consistent business information. The goal is to be part of the answer, not just a link beneath it, as the search landscape continues to evolve.
