AI-Reported Threats Lead to Arrest of Former Goldman Sachs Analyst
A former Goldman Sachs analyst has become the first person to be arrested after being reported by AI. Darren Shida Zhou, 25, was a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs' West Palm Beach branch until his termination in June after he made violent threats against his ex-girlfriend on ChatGPT.
Zhou had entered multiple threatening statements into the chat box, including 'I'm going to kill her before the end of this month' and 'If I can't have her, no one will.'
His ex-girlfriend had broken up with him in March 2026, citing his volatile and controlling behavior. She tried to block his contact information but he continued to send messages through temporary numbers.
The chat logs were automatically flagged by ChatGPT's security mechanism, which then transferred them to OpenAI's manual review team. OpenAI reported the threats to law enforcement agencies, leading to Zhou's arrest on May 29, 2026.
