Coca-Cola Dominance Sparks Debate at University of Alabama
The University of Alabama's partnership with The Coca-Cola Company has sparked controversy on campus. In 2018, the university signed a $2 million, 10-year contract with Coca-Cola, which provides its soft drinks to students through vending machines at University events and in dining halls.
This exclusivity arrangement means that other popular brands like PepsiCo and Keurig Dr Pepper are not available on campus. Students who prefer these alternatives must travel off-campus to find them.
Coca-Cola's dominance has led some students to speak out about their preferences. Esther Uche, a senior majoring in psychology and kinesiology, said she prefers Coca-Cola because of its familiarity in taste and her personal upbringing.
Others, like Jaycee Esters, a sophomore nursing major, prefer Dr Pepper due to its connection to her hometown and her medical journey with gastroparesis. Esters has a unique relationship with soft drinks, as her diagnosis has made eating and drinking difficult at times.
