AI Stocks Plunge Amid Industry Leaders' Warning of Safety Risks
AI stocks globally plummeted on Monday after industry leaders warned of a necessary slowdown to ensure humanity's safety. The AI sector has been under pressure due to concerns over its rapid growth in value. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, stated that a deliberate and global slowdown is needed, citing risks such as AI becoming capable of controlling the internet within six to 12 months.
The warning from industry leaders led to significant losses for several major players. Nvidia, which has seen massive profits due to its role in training AI models, sank 3.4%. Softbank Group, a key investor in OpenAI, lost 10.7% after OpenAI's Sam Altman supported the concept of a slowdown.
However, gains from other sectors helped limit Wall Street's losses. Software companies such as Intuit, Autodesk, and Adobe saw significant increases, potentially mitigating some of the AI sector's impact on the market.
