AI Treated Publisher Content As Raw Material
AI treats publisher content as a commodity because it wants 'information stripped to its raw material,' rather than expert opinion, according to Brian Morrissey at The Rebooting.
This fundamental misalignment leads to the commoditization of publishers, which is further exacerbated by an overabundance of supply and AI's incentives to process vast amounts of data. Jon Roberts, chief innovation officer at People Inc., noted that while chips and power have supply constraints, publisher content does not.
Publishers are considering blocking Google's combination search indexer/AI scraper entirely if Google-driven revenue gets too small, but even this could be ineffective unless multiple publishers cut off the AI model simultaneously. Roberts explained that 'chips and power have supply constraints, Enchilada recipes do not.'
