AI Wave Reshapes Tech Sector with Dominant Bot Traffic, Optical Outperformance
Goldman Sachs' top tech trader, Peter Callahan, has identified three major structural shifts in the AI wave that are reshaping the technology sector. One key shift is the growing dominance of AI agents over human traffic on the internet, with bot traffic now accounting for 53% of total web traffic and projected to be 1,000 times greater than human traffic within five years.
Another significant shift is the outperformance of optical components compared to memory chips, which has gained over 20 percentage points since August. This divergence is attributed to the market's repricing of AI inference-stage compute demand structures, with optical interconnect demand surging faster than anticipated.
The third structural shift is the increasing adoption of open-source models at dramatically lower costs, posing a direct challenge to closed-source ecosystems. Pinterest revealed that fine-tuning open-source models on proprietary data achieved performance superior to third-party closed-source models, at a transaction cost of less than 8% of comparable closed-source alternatives.
The current market is characterized as a 'return to normalcy rather than a boom,' with Goldman Sachs describing the slowdown in earnings growth as a structural shift rather than a reversal in direction. The trend towards an AI-driven economy is becoming increasingly pronounced, with persistent GPU compute shortages and expanding enterprise AI budgets pointing towards an accelerating emergence of an 'inference economy.'
