AI Workforce Skills Gap: Human Oversight Trumps Technical Expertise

An IBM study reveals a significant gap between the skills that employers believe workers need for AI and those that employees consider important. The research, conducted across multiple countries and industries, found that 71% of chief human resources officers (CHROs) see the ability to supervise, validate, and override AI outputs as the most essential workforce skill.

However, only 29% of employees rank judgment as important. Critical thinking also emerged as a concern, with 49% of employees and 57% of CHROs saying it is among the most important skills in the AI era.

The study suggests that AI can create additional tasks rather than simply removing them, with 80% of CHROs saying AI adoption creates 'invisible' work. This includes checking recommendations, correcting errors, adding context, and managing exceptions.
