Aiken’s Tribute Parkway Open but Missing from Google Maps

Aiken’s newly opened $15 million Tribute Parkway is already in use by drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, but it remains invisible on Google Maps and other major navigation apps. Despite its completion and opening on September 28, the 2.35-mile road does not appear as an option for routing, making it a well-kept local secret for the time being. According to Aiken’s assistant city manager Lex Kirkland, the road is listed as “PROPOSED” in the county’s Geographic Information System and will not be included in this month’s update to Google Maps, which typically lags by about a month.

The delay in updating digital maps highlights the dominance of Google Maps and Waze, which together hold roughly 75% of the U.S. market, with Apple Maps capturing nearly 25%. Aiken County regularly sends data updates to these platforms, but Apple does not accept uploads, and TomTom no longer processes them. The road, originally known as the ‘Powderhouse Connector,’ is part of a long-term project aimed at reducing traffic congestion and fostering economic development along Whiskey Road.

Adjacent to Tribute Parkway, several residential developments are in the works, including Summerall, which will feature 167 single-family homes and 163 townhomes, and Magnolia Run Reserve, offering a mix of housing and a senior living campus. Aiken City Manager Stuart Bedenbaugh estimates that once the road is fully completed and surrounding land is developed, traffic on Whiskey Road could decrease by up to 20%. The parkway also honors Aiken’s public safety officers, with roundabouts named after two officers killed in the line of duty.
