Air Force One Grounded for 2-Month Upgrade Period
The Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar to serve as the Air Force One is set for another major modification, just three months after its inaugural flight. The aircraft will be grounded in October for approximately 60 days to undergo technical and security upgrades.
The $400 million, gold-trimmed jet has been in service since July 1 and has already accumulated a significant amount of flight time, including international presidential travel. During this period, the aircraft underwent an unusually rapid transformation from its original Qatar Amiri Flight livery to its current configuration as the VC-25B Bridge.
The upgrades are expected to enhance the aircraft's defensive and security systems, allowing it to operate in a wider range of environments. While the exact equipment to be installed remains undisclosed, possible additions include sensors that detect approaching hazards, infrared countermeasure equipment, associated processors, and cockpit warning interfaces.
