Air Force One's Next Generation Takes a Crucial First Step

The long-awaited new Air Force One is finally nearing a major milestone after years of delays. Boeing's VC-25B aircraft, which was originally expected to be delivered in 2024, will power up for the first time before the end of 2026.

This marks a significant step forward for the program, but it doesn't mean the aircraft is ready to fly just yet. The power-on milestone will give engineers an early look at whether the aircraft's electrical architecture can function as one integrated system.

The VC-25B features extensive military, communications, defensive, and presidential modifications, including a network of over 2,000 wire bundles and approximately 250 miles of wiring. This is roughly comparable to the driving distance between Washington DC and New York City.

According to General Dale White, the Air Force's direct reporting program manager for major programs, 'the recent progress has been tremendous' and Boeing is moving at a 'really, really fast clip.' However, the aircraft remains roughly four years behind its original 2024 delivery objective, with the first VC-25B now scheduled for delivery in mid-2028.
