Air France 777 Makes Emergency Return to JFK After Bird Strike Scare

An Air France Boeing 777-300ER, registration F-GZNT, made an unexpected U-turn back to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York after taking off from JFK on August 24th with 314 people on board.

The crew reported a possible bird strike and a burning smell in the cockpit during the initial climb. They initially continued the climb while assessing the situation, but later decided to return to JFK after donning oxygen masks due to the smoke.

Air traffic controllers coordinated the runway inspection, provided vectors back to the airport, and arranged an approach with emergency services standing by. The aircraft completed the return without a reported landing incident.
