Air India Boosts North American Presence with New Boeing 787-9 Aircraft
Air India is expanding its presence in North America by introducing Boeing 787-9 aircraft on its Toronto-Delhi sector. The airline aims to increase its market share from 30% upwards, replacing its old aircraft with the new ones.
The new aircraft has a configuration of 30 business class, 28 premium economy, and 238 economy class seats. Air India officials claim that the response from the Indo-Canadian community and other passengers has been overwhelming since its introduction in January this year for 10 flights a week between Toronto and Delhi.
Air Canada is currently the only airline operating direct non-stop flights to India from Canada, along with Air India. Easy Connect facilities are available for international passengers on routes such as Amritsar-Toronto, allowing them to check in their bags and get immigration clearances done in Amritsar rather than Delhi or Mumbai.
Air India plans to renovate and upgrade its lounges at various destinations in North America and has placed orders for 100 additional Airbus aircraft and 30 Boeing aircraft. The airline has also commenced a $400 million refit program for 66 legacy aircraft, which will lead to a complete refresh of the product with modern cabin configuration, new seats, carpets, curtains, and upholstery.
