Airbus A350F Freighter Takes First Flight Ahead of 2027 Launch
Airbus has successfully completed the maiden flight of its new A350F freighter aircraft, marking a significant step in its efforts to expand its commercial aviation portfolio. On September 29, the aircraft took off from Toulouse, France, after nine months of certification trials. The flight lasted four hours and ten minutes, reaching an altitude of 25,000 feet, and was deemed a success.
The A350F was piloted by a team of Airbus flight test crew, including Captain Bernardo Saez-Benito and First Officer Sylvain Guiraud. The flight included basic tests to examine the aircraft's systems, airworthiness, and flying qualities. Airbus aims to position the A350F as a competitor to Boeing's 777 series, with plans to enter service in 2027.
The A350F boasts a range of up to 8,700 kilometers and a payload capacity of up to 111 tonnes, making it suitable for long-haul cargo operations. The aircraft is constructed with 70% lightweight advanced materials, reducing its maximum take-off weight by 46 tonnes compared to competitors. Airbus CEO of Commercial Aircraft, Lars Wagner, described the A350F as a 'game-changer' for the air cargo market, emphasizing its operational flexibility, fuel efficiency, and range.
Airbus is already seeing strong demand for the A350F, with 115 aircraft sold. The company hopes the freighter will help meet the growing global demand for air cargo, as highlighted by IATA's data showing an 8.5% year-on-year increase in global air cargo demand in June 2026. IATA Director General Willie Walsh noted that demand growth outpaced capacity, driven by high-value technology products and urgent shipments.
