Airbus Takes Flight with A350F Cargo Aircraft, Targets Boeing Dominance
Airbus has marked a significant milestone in its bid to challenge Boeing's dominance of the large-freighter market. The European manufacturer flew its A350F cargo aircraft on its maiden flight from Toulouse, France, with the four-hour journey marking a major step towards entry into service in 2027.
The A350F is derived from Airbus' successful A350 long-haul passenger family and features advanced materials and Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines to deliver improved fuel efficiency. The aircraft can carry up to 111 tonnes of payload and fly up to 8,700 kilometres, making it suitable for the growing movement of high-value and time-sensitive goods.
Airbus has secured 115 orders for the A350F from 14 customers, including Atlas Air Worldwide and Air China Cargo. The company is targeting certification and first customer deliveries in 2027, with the aircraft expected to offer up to a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared with previous-generation aircraft.
