Airline Miles and Hotel Points: Don't Let Them Expire Unused
Millions of people earn airline miles and hotel points every year, but many are unaware that these rewards can expire if not used within a certain timeframe. According to Deloitte's 2025 Consumer Loyalty Program Survey, 40% of respondents sometimes forget to redeem their rewards.
Some loyalty programs, such as Delta SkyMiles, Southwest Rapid Rewards, and United MileagePlus, offer rewards that don't expire. However, others may expire after 12 to 36 months of inactivity. For example, Japan Airlines' JAL Mileage Bank miles expire after 36 months, with no option to extend the expiration date.
To avoid losing these rewards, it's essential to understand the policies for each program and take steps to reset the expiration clock. One way to do this is by earning more points or miles through partner purchases, shopping portals, or even buying miles or points.
For instance, Hilton Honors points expire after 24 consecutive months of inactivity. However, with a single purchase made using a Hilton co-branded credit card, such as the Hilton Honors American Express Card or Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, you can reset this expiration clock.
