AI's Hidden Path: Dean Shares Unconventional Advice for Young Tech Pros
Jeff Dean, former head of Google AI and chief scientist at the tech giant, has shared his advice for young people entering the tech field. Instead of trying to master artificial intelligence (AI) developments, Dean recommends skimming a wide range of papers and looking for connections others may have missed.
Dean, who co-founded AI company DiscoveryLoop after leaving Google earlier this month, spoke at the Asian American Scholar Forum's 2026 Frontier & Pioneer Symposium. He emphasized that his advice is not about cutting corners, but rather learning how to use time wisely and think broadly.
The perfect problem to work on in a reasonably long-term manner, according to Dean, is one that can be solved in around five years. He advises trying various approaches, some of which may not work, but others will lead to breakthroughs.
