Boeing's Troubled Past Revisited as Production Ramps Up

A new Netflix documentary 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing' has reignited questions about Boeing's troubled past as the company ramps up production. The film focuses on whistleblowers who raised concerns about declining safety and quality standards inside the company, including John Barnett, a former Boeing quality manager who died by suicide in 2024.

Barnett described incidents he believed reflected inadequate safety controls and said he encountered resistance or threats of retaliation after raising concerns with management. A Boeing spokesperson stated that the allegations have been widely reported over the years, but some remain unfounded while others were thoroughly addressed or are being improved upon under regulatory oversight.

Boeing has recently reported stronger aircraft deliveries, a growing backlog, and progress toward increasing production. The company's second-quarter revenue rose 8% to $24.6 billion, with commercial airplane deliveries increasing to 171 from 150 during the same period last year. Boeing is expanding its 737 MAX production line in Washington state, which will help increase output to 52 airplanes a month from its current pace of 47.

As Boeing works through a backlog of about 4,300 airplanes, it regained additional responsibility for conducting final safety checks on its 737 MAX and 787 aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that Boeing's inspections are sufficient to ensure the aircraft are airworthy after months of review.
