Alaska Woman Accidentally Poaches Birds After Google's AI Provides Misleading Hunting Season Info

Christina Weaver, a resident of Kodiak in Alaska's port city, learned the hard way that even supposedly cutting-edge AI can't always navigate the complexities of hunting regulations.

Weaver was following Google's AI overviews when she harvested three wilson's snipes in September, not realizing that Alaska's general waterfowl season doesn't begin until October 8. The birds are common and have a stable population across North America, but late summer is a critical time for their transition out of breeding season and the beginning of their fall migration.

Weaver became suspicious after learning about the law and turned herself in to an Alaska Wildlife officer, who noted that his own search for 'snipe season' yielded similar results from Google's AI overviews. The officer stated that Weaver would have learned that snipes can be legally taken from October 8 through January 22 if she had done more research.
