Alphabet Deploys Submarine Cables to Fuel Latin America's Digital Economy
Google's parent company Alphabet (GOOGL.US) is making significant strides in Latin America's digital economy by deploying three new submarine cable systems. The Alisios, Canoa, and OlaLuz cables will connect various countries in the region, including Chile, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. This move aims to enhance internet connectivity and solidify Chile's position as a digital hub in the region.
The Alisios submarine cable will link the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Chile, while Canoa will connect the Dominican Republic with Bermuda. OlaLuz will connect the Dominican Republic to Florida in the United States. This expansion is part of Chile's efforts to attract technology companies by leveraging its economic and political stability, extensive fiber-optic network, submarine cables, and abundant renewable energy resources.
Louis de Grange, Chile’s Minister of Transport and Telecommunications and Minister of Public Works, stated that this will 'further solidify our country’s position as a leader in the digital sector in Latin America.' He noted that the Alisios submarine cable 'will undoubtedly drive local business development, foster economic growth, and bring the opportunities of the global digital economy directly into the homes of millions of Chileans.'
