Alphabet Funds Virtual Power Plant Experiment Amid Climate Ambitions
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has fully funded Pacific Gas and Electric Company's SHARE virtual power plant experiment. The project aims to network nearly 21,000 home energy devices and new battery-enabled heat pumps in Bay Area communities by 2027. This move is part of Alphabet's long-term climate and infrastructure ambitions.
The SHARE virtual power plant proof-of-concept was announced in early September 2026. It will boost grid capacity, reliability, and household energy efficiency. By fully financing the project, Alphabet is signaling its technology and capital may extend into energy infrastructure and emissions-focused applications beyond its core advertising and cloud businesses.
Despite this AI and energy push, investors should still closely watch how rising legal and regulatory pressures could impact Alphabet's future revenue and earnings paths.
