Alphabet Shares Plummet After Gemini 4 Argon Launch
Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOGL, GOOG) shares rose up to 1.70% in after-hours trading on Wednesday evening following the launch of its new flagship artificial-intelligence model, Gemini 4 Argon.
The model was described as Google's most capable to date and is being pitched as a solution to rivals OpenAI and Anthropic.
However, the rally proved short-lived, with shares giving back the move and then some by the next trading session. By Thursday, Alphabet stock had traded at $340.615, down 2.51% over the prior 24 hours.
The initial market reaction was attributed to Google's cautious release of the model, which is being made available first to a narrower set of users under its 'Fairwind Program'. The restricted rollout has sparked debate within the industry about how much autonomy to give frontier models before wide release.
