Alphabet Shares Plummet as AI Price War Escalates
Shares of Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) plummeted by 3.4% in afternoon trading after concerns about increasing competitive pressure from rival Meta Platforms and other AI labs.
The pullback comes as Meta's Muse AI assistant surpasses 2.8 million downloads in its first 12 days, according to Apptopia data reported by Reuters. Additionally, Alphabet directed record sums into data centers and hardware, raising its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $195 billion and $205 billion.
The rise of personal assistants capable of executing tasks directly threatens the ad auction model that generates most of Alphabet's operating profit.
Rival AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic released cheaper frontier models, escalating an enterprise price war that could weaken margins across Google's Gemini portfolio. OpenAI launched GPT-6 Sol and Luna, slashing application programming interface prices by 50% compared to prior promotional rates, while Anthropic unveiled Claude Opus 5.5, which runs roughly 40% cheaper than its predecessor.
Alphabet's shares have only had five moves greater than 5% over the last year, indicating that today's move is significant but not necessarily a fundamental change in perception of the business.
