Alphabet's AI Advantages Could Double a $1,000 Investment in Five Years
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has solidified its position as the primary gateway to the internet. This status is reinforced by its ownership of Chrome, the world's most used browser, and Android, the leading smartphone operating system. Additionally, a revenue-sharing agreement with Apple ensures Alphabet's search engine remains the default on Apple devices, capturing a significant portion of the market.
The company's advantages extend beyond distribution. Alphabet has developed custom tensor processing units (TPUs) for over a decade, giving it a strong edge in AI. These TPUs enable Alphabet to train its Gemini model and run inference at a lower cost than competitors relying on Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs). This technological edge, combined with its distribution and ad network advantages, positions Alphabet strongly in the consumer AI market.
Alphabet's hardware capabilities have also attracted other companies. Anthropic, an AI startup, has begun purchasing Alphabet's TPUs for its own data centers, creating a high-margin revenue stream. Anthropic has committed to spending about $200 billion with Google Cloud over the next five years.
Analysts project Alphabet's revenue to climb from just under $500 billion this year to $1.13 trillion in 2031. Adjusted earnings per share are expected to jump from $11.81 in 2026 to $29.07 in 2031. Assuming a 15% growth in adjusted EPS by 2032 and a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 20 to 25, Alphabet's stock could trade between $670 and $835 in five years. This would make a $1,000 investment worth between $2,000 and $2,500, representing a 100% to 150% return.
Beyond its core AI and cloud businesses, Alphabet has investments in robotaxis (Waymo) and quantum computing that could start paying off in the next five years. These factors make Alphabet stock a compelling buy for long-term investors.
