Alphabet's AI Gamble: Will $10k Grow to $35,778 by 2030?
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is investing heavily in AI infrastructure. The company's second-quarter revenue reached $119.80 billion, up 24.2% year-over-year, with cloud revenue growing by 82%. However, Alphabet's free cash flow turned negative in the second quarter, and the company suspended its buyback program.
The bulls argue that Alphabet's growth rate justifies a high price-to-earnings ratio of 23, citing a trailing P/E of 17 and a PEG ratio of 1.255. Google Cloud has a backlog of $460 billion+, with nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies using its Gemini Enterprise platform.
The bears, on the other hand, point out that Alphabet's AI buildout is burning through cash. Long-term debt rose from $46.5 billion to $98.2 billion in the second quarter, and free cash flow was -$5.86 billion. The company's earnings also look stronger than its underlying business, with a net income of $112.11 billion including a $99.03 billion gain on equity securities.
Analysts still see 26% upside from Alphabet's current price, which stands at $338.24. A base-case projection suggests that a $10,000 investment in the company today could grow to around $35,778 by 2030, while an upside scenario puts the stock at $36,201.
