Alphabet's AI Leadership Undergoes Major Shakeup with Key Executives Departing

Google's parent company Alphabet has undergone significant changes in its top AI leadership. Sundar Pichai, Alphabet CEO, announced that key engineers and founders are changing roles or starting new projects.

Demis Gassabis is stepping down as Chief Operating Officer of Google DeepMind to become Chairman of the company and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. He will focus on artificial general intelligence (AGI), scientific research, and Isomorphic Labs, a medical startup.

Koray Kavukcuoglu has been appointed Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, taking over day-to-day management of the unit. He will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and Gemini App and developer tools.

Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, long-time engineers at Google, are leaving to found an independent non-profit corporation focused on accelerating discovery in machine learning, science, and engineering. Alphabet will serve as a founding investor and cloud partner.
