Alphabet's AI Servers Pay for Themselves in Under Two Years
Alphabet's historic spending spree has sparked concerns about when its investments will start paying for themselves. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian offered a clear answer at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, stating that AI servers generate a full return on their cost in less than two years.
The aggregate payback period on Google's AI infrastructure is under 24 months, while servers built with proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) pay back in roughly half that time, less than one year. This marks a significant milestone for Alphabet, indicating that its aggressive capital deployment is starting to translate into durable economics.
Google Cloud revenue grew 82% year-over-year in the second quarter, reaching $24.77 billion, while operating income tripled to $8.8 billion. The company's cloud backlog reached $514 billion, and nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Gemini Enterprise.
