Alphabet's AI Shift: From Research to Commercial Scale
Alphabet's AI strategy is shifting towards commercialization and scale, according to Goldman Sachs analysts. The analysts argue that the company is evolving from a research-led organization into a scaled AI platform company.
The recent management changes at Alphabet, including the restructuring of Google DeepMind, point to this shift. Demis Hassabis now has a broader role as chief scientist focused on artificial general intelligence, science, and long-term research. Koray Kavukcuoglu takes operational control of Gemini product development and commercialization.
The analysts believe that Alphabet's advantages in distribution, monetization, and infrastructure will become more important. This includes its consumer products, Google Cloud, and large-scale computing capacity. However, the company remains constrained by computing resources, making it crucial to allocate capacity towards areas with stronger commercial returns.
Goldman Sachs also points out that Alphabet's recent positioning of Gemini around 'Gemini Intelligence' across applications and hardware signals a greater focus on commercialization and scale. The AI industry is moving towards better price-performance and faster commercialization rather than pursuing frontier performance at any cost, the analysts said.
