Alphabet's Cash Machine Outpaces Regulators
Alphabet's core business is generating cash at an incredible pace, far surpassing regulators' ability to write fines. In fact, a $3.5 billion fine handed down by the European Commission in Q3 2025 could be covered ten times over with just one quarter of Alphabet's operating cash flow.
The company's impressive financials are evident in its quarterly earnings reports. In Q2 FY2026, Google Search and other revenue pulled in $63.27 billion, a 17% year-over-year increase. YouTube ads added $11.06 billion, while Google Cloud grew an astonishing 82% to $24.77 billion.
Total revenue for the quarter reached $119.80 billion, a 24.23% year-over-year jump. Operating cash flow in Q2 alone was $39.07 billion, and Alphabet has now beaten EPS estimates 11 consecutive quarters, with Q2 EPS of $9.11 against a $3.04 estimate.
The author of the article notes that regulators keep running into this math problem: how to meaningfully dent Alphabet's cash machine with fines? The company's financials are so robust that it barely notices billion-dollar fines. This raises an interesting question about how to value a business that outgrows its own penalties every few weeks.
