Alphabet's ChromeOS Shifts Upmarket with New Premium Laptops
Google has launched its new premium laptop category for Android users, called Googlebook. This move comes as Apple is shifting towards more affordable options with its $699 MacBook Neo. Starting at $899, the first models of Googlebook will be available from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, running on either Intel or Qualcomm chips. These laptops offer up to 14 hours of battery life.
The new Googlebook series pushes ChromeOS into premium hardware with tighter Android integration and Gemini features. This includes the ability to draft and organize text, answer questions about on-screen content, and resume tasks handed off from an Android phone. Google's first flagship ChromeOS attempt since 2017's Pixelbook and 2019's Pixelbook Go marks a significant shift in its strategy.
Alphabet shares rose 1.48% intraday following the announcement. The launch of Googlebook is seen as an effort by Alphabet to target premium buyers, a departure from Chromebook makers' traditional focus on low-end laptops for students and budget-conscious consumers.
