Alphabet's Cloud Computing Division Hits Record Growth
Alphabet's cloud computing division continues to demonstrate strong growth, with an 82% year-over-year revenue increase in its second-quarter earnings report. This marks the fifth consecutive quarter of accelerating revenue growth for the segment.
The company's backlog of contracted cloud services has reached $514 billion, with approximately half of that expected to be received over the next two years. This translates to an average annual revenue of $128.5 billion per year over the next two years from its backlog alone.
Management noted strong growth in Google Workspace and other enterprise solutions, driven by the integration of Gemini, Google's large language model. Existing customers are exceeding their commitments by more than 50%, and management is ramping up sales of custom AI accelerators, TPUs.
The company's capital expenditures climbed 100% last quarter, reaching nearly $45 billion, with a significant portion going towards building data centers. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy noted that it takes about two years for data center spending to start generating a cash return.
